THREE members of the same family have spent Christmas deployed together in Afghanistan.

Sergeant Lisa Fulton, from Darlington, her husband, Sergeant Adrian Fulton, and her brother, Trooper Daniel Ghundoo, are all serving with the Queen’s Royal Hussars (QRH) in the war zone.

The regiment deployed to Afghanistan in September from its regular base in Sennelager, Germany.

Mrs Fulton said: “It’s obviously a huge worry for the family, but in a funny sort of way its better to get it all over with in one go.

“Adrian and I were both together in Iraq as well. When most couples are flying back from somewhere hot it’s probably because they have been on holiday, but with us it’s more likely to be a war zone.

“I enjoy my job anyway, but working with my family and friends makes it a lot more than just a job.

“I’m really enjoying the tour here. Having grown up in a mixed white-Asian family I find it easy to interact with the local Afghans.”

It is Trooper Ghundoo’s first operational tour after joining the regiment two years ago.

He said: “Obviously, the QRH would have been the right choice anyway, but having my sister and brother-in-law in the regiment was just a bonus. Although sometimes I think having my older sister in the regiment is like having two regimental sergeant majors.”

Although all three soldiers are in the same regiment they have different roles and responsibilities.

Sgt Adrian Fulton is a troop sergeant in the armoured vehicle reconnaissance company.

Sgt Lisa Fulton is a human resource specialist in the Task Force Helmand headquarters at Lashkar Gah, and Trooper Ghundoo is ground holding with an infantry company in Lashkar Gah district.

Mrs Fulton added: “My husband and brother are both in different companies while I am based in headquarters. It’s probably a good thing to be honest. If I was working with them directly it would be an extra worry.”

Both the Fultons and Trooper Ghundoo are due back from Afghanistan in April with the rest of their regiment.
