POLICE sealed off a house and arrested a man after an incident in Darlington tonight.

Officers were called to the home on Corporation Road around 7pm after reports of windows having been broken.

When they arrived a search of the premises uncovered what officers initially believe to be a quantity of controlled drugs.

The premises was taped off and the arrested man taken to hospital for a precautionary check-up. He was later transported back to Darlington police station where he was detained overnight.

A number of other people are being sought in connection with the incident.

Sgt Simon Gdaniec, of Darlington police, said tonight: "A passer-by reported to us some form of a disturbance at that location.

"We have attended and located a 28-year-old male and he has been arrested and brought down to the police station in relation to us discovering an unknown and undisclosed quantity of controlled drugs at the scene.

"When we arrived some windows at the front of the premises had been smashed. Exactly what occurred in relation to that we dont know at the moment.

"We do have a number of persons outstanding that we believe would be able to assist us with enquiries."

Sgt Gdaniec said the property was taped off in relation to the drugs find and to enable officers to conduct a thorough search of the property unhindered.

He said he could not say where the drugs were found in the house.

"They have been brought down to Darlington police station," he said.

"The man is in custody at the moment and will be in overnight. I imagine he will be interviewed early tomorrow morning. He was taken to hospital and checked over, but he was brought back down here within a very short space of time."

Officers were still at the scene around 10pm, but the tape was expected to be removed before midnight.

Asked if this sort of incident was unusual for the Corporation Road area, Sgt Gdaniec said: "It is not untypical."
