DURHAM Police has stepped up patrols by armed and unarmed officers at Durham-Tees Valley Airport.
A force spokesman said it was impossible to say how long extra security would stay in place, because action by the force would be determined by the national situation.
Durham's Assistant Chief Constable Michael Banks said: "We appreciate this action will cause major disruption and inevitably lead to delays, but public safety is obviously the primary concern for all of us.
"In common with all UK forces, we have well-established contingency procedures for this sort of situation and we hope these will be in place for a limited period only."
Anyone wanting advice on travel arrangements is urged to ring the airport on (01325) 332811 or log onto www.durhamteesvalleyairport.com.
