A FLEECE made from recycled plastic bottles was the unusual prize collected by a competition winner.

Benita Jacobs, from Thoralby, received the gift when she visited a new recycling centre at East Witton.

She entered the contest in April, when residents in Wensleydale and Coverdale were given boxes to store paper, cans and glass to take to a recycling centre.

Clare Utley, from West Scrafton, won wine goblets made from recycled beer bottles.

The latest centre is at the Cover Bridge Inn. Landlord Nick Harrington said: "We were happy to turn a piece of disused land in the car park into a recycling centre. It will benefit the whole community."

A recycling centre at Aysgarth has been moved to the George and Dragon pub car park.

Paper, cans and glass can also be recycled in Wensleydale at Gayle Lane, in Hawes, Hawes Youth Hostel, Leyburn car park, Askrigg tennis courts, Redmire car park and the Three Horse Shoes pub, Wensley.

People can collect recycling boxes from Leyburn and Hawes community offices.
