A BAND from the North-East is recording a version of the Blaydon Races for charity.

The Longsands are following Tim Healy, Jimmy Nail and Kevin Whately by doing their own version of the song for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

The five-piece band, from Cramlington, Northumberland, will perform the regional folk song on the pitch at St James’ Park before Sunday’s derby against Sunderland.

Songwriter and guitarist Ian Barnes said: “We are all big Newcastle fans and a while ago were given the opportunity to record our version of the Blaydon Races, which is played before the team comes out.”

The song is available at thelongsands.co.uk from Sunday. The download will include two versions of the song and a track called Bully, from the band’s debut album, Meet Me in Spanish City.
