PEOPLE across the North East and North Yorkshire have raised more than £2m to help flood victims in Pakistan.

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) announced today that donations from the region has reached £2,704,000.

The widespread flooding has already claimed more than 1,500 lives and 17 million people have been directly affected.

DEC Chief Executive, Brendan Gormley said: "People in the North-East have made a huge difference to the Appeal for the people of Pakistan, and we thank them all for the contribution they have made.

"Overall, the UK has raised £40m for the Pakistan Floods Appeal, allowing the DEC and its partners to reach 800,000 people in the flood-stricken country."
