A DILAPIDATED snooker club is being turned into a £1.5m business centre.

The building, in the Sunniside area of Sunderland, is being given a new lease of life as part of a multi-million pound city centre regeneration.

When the Argent Business and Conference Centre opens next month, the three-storey building will provide fully-managed office accommodation for lease.

The development has been welcomed by the Sunniside Partnership, the organisation leading the 14-year Sunniside regeneration programme.

Ian Wardle, partnership project director, said: "It will serve a need within the area for good- quality accommodation and it will also attract new businesses."

Sunderland-born businessman Mick Thurlbeck set up property development company CT-II Limited to create the centre.

He said: "There will literally be nothing we can't reasonably do for our tenants - leaving them free to focus on their core business."
