NATURE lovers are being invited to venture into the forest at the crack of dawn to help keep tabs on small mammals, especially water voles.
The Forestry Commission and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council have linked-up with the Tees Valley Wildlife Trust to stage a trek in Guisborough Forest and Walkway on Sunday, May 7.
Setting out at 7am, early birds will be able to join experts examining traps for mice, voles, shrews and other creatures.
Ranger Cath Brason said: "By their very nature, small mammals can be difficult to spot. Not only are they fascinating in their own right, but they're a key link in the food chain.
"We'll be really interested to see if we can find any water voles, which like many small mammals, have been badly affected by habitat loss."
The Wildlife Trust is running a two-year project to map the distribution of small mammals in the region and compile a clearer picture of conservation priorities.
The event costs £2, or £5 with breakfast, vegetarian options will be available.
