Travel-weary Jason Gillespie delayed his debut for Yorkshire yesterday to recharge his batteries in time for their Championship clash with Warwickshire at Edgbaston on Wednesday.

It had been hoped the Australian pace ace would come straight into the side for the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy match against Derbyshire at Headingley but Gillespie decided he was too tired to be at his best.

Gillespie touched down at Heathrow on Saturday afternoon but was unable to get on a flight to Leeds-Bradford so he was driven to Headingley.

"Coming straight from back-to-back Tests in Bangladesh and then having long flights left me feeling absolutely jaded," said Gillespie.

"I had intended to play but after talking to Craig White and my buddy Darren Lehmann I decided to give myself a couple of days to settle in."

It was Lehmann, Gillespie's captain with South Australia, who told him in the winter that Yorkshire may be interested.

"My ears pricked up at that and I thought it would be a great opportunity to play county cricket," said Gillespie. "Darren is one of my best mates, I know Whitey reasonably well and once I had spoken to David Byas I knew Yorkshire was the county for me.

"I play positive, aggressive cricket to win and I hope I can contribute to many Yorkshire victories. I want to take a lot of wickets but if I bowl well and they come at the other end then I will be just as happy with that.

"Naturally, I hope that Australia will want me for the Ashes series in Australia later this year but all that is a long way off and for the next few months I just want to concentrate on doing well for Yorkshire."

* Essex skipper Ronnie Irani and Alastair Cook handed Glamorgan a ten-wicket thrashing in a rain-affected C & G Trophy match at Chelmsford.

Replying to a total of 98 for five in a ten-over battle, they saw their side to the winning post with 17 balls to spare.

Irani smashed an unbeaten 51 from 21 balls while Cook finished on 46 from 23 balls.

Worcestershire beat Nottinghamshire by two wickets at Trent Bridge thanks to polished bowling from Zaheer Khan and Ray Price.

Indian left-arm seamer Khan claimed three wickets for 26 on his county debut, while Price finished with two for 17 from his nine overs of left-arm spin.
