ENGLISH Heritage has followed the lead of ale-loving monks and launched a new beer.
Historians believe monks from Byland Abbey in Coxwold, near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, secretly brewed their own ale.
The Abbey Inn, which is owned by English Heritage and overlooks the ruins, has now launched Byland Brew.
The beer is the creation of Malton-based brewery, Suddaby's, and is already proving popular with locals and visitors.
Richard Mason, assistant manager of the Abbey Inn, said: "We have trialled Byland Brew for a couple of weeks and the response has been fantastic, so we are planning to make this a permanent addition to our drinks menu.
"We get a lot of visitors who pop in for a quick drink before they tour around the abbey, and this is a fantastically refreshing drink to sustain them as they walk around the site."
