BUS drivers have been testing their reaction times as part of a safety campaign.

Darlington Borough Council teamed up with drivers from Arriva North-East's Darlington depot as part of the Spring Into Safety campaign.

The council set up its brake- reaction tester unit at the depot to give drivers the chance to see how quickly they could perform an emergency stop.

Arriva provided prizes for the drivers with the fastest reaction times.

The test was conducted at 30mph and was designed to be a realistic way to show how alert drivers need to be.

Councillor Bill Dixon, cabinet member for community and public protection, said: "It is essential for bus drivers who are getting behind the wheel of public service vehicles to have had as much training as possible."

Tony Stevens, district manager for Arriva North-East, said: "Bus drivers have a skilled and responsible job and our training plays a huge role in helping them manage day-to-day challenges.

"The brake reaction simulator was very realistic and drivers found it a good experience."

The brake tester reaction unit is available for training to any employer in Darlington. Contact (01325) 388717 for details.
