TWO neighbourhood wardens who helped police collar youngsters spraying graffiti on garages have been praised for their efforts.
Wardens Kay Hughes and Peter Henderson, who work for Durham City Council, were on duty in Witton Gilbert they came across the 12-year-olds defacing garages at the back of Oak Lea.
The wardens do not have the power of arrest, but they asked the youngsters their names - they initially gave false ones - and asked them to wait until police arrived. They also photographed the damage.
When local officers arrived, they arrested the pair, who were later given an official reprimand.
Inspector Dick Dodds, of Durham Police, said: "This is a fine example of how the police and local authority are actively working together to combat anti-social behaviour in the community. Working together, we will make a real difference to people's lives."
Andrew Jackson, the co-ordinator of the wardens, said: "The two organisations are jointly creating a cleaner, safer and greener environment for all those who live in, work in or visit the district."
