POTHOLES and cracks which will cost £25m to repair have been blamed partly on bad weather.

The latest survey carried out by Hartlepool Borough Council revealed the figure required to repair the backlog in the town's road repairs.

However, with an annual budget of £1.2m to spend, there is little chance of an immediate solution for the town's road users.

A Hartlepool council spokesman said: "Some road surfaces around the town have deteriorated over the winter months and one of the reasons for this is the long, cold winter weather.

"We have experienced sub-zero temperatures on 60 occasions.

"The problem is at its worst in the winter months, when the road surface is weakened after water gets into cracks, freezes, expands and then thaws."

To add to the problem, the grit used on the roads over winter is mildly corrosive.

Many roads have seen potholes develop, including Spalding Road, Valley Drive, South Crescent, Wooler Road, Addison Road, Elizabeth Way, Northgate, Hardwick Court, Hart Lane, Hutton Avenue, Cairnston Road and Egerton Road.

"We are aware of the situation and will do everything we can with the money we have got," said the council spokesman.
