A MAN who threatened a schoolboy after he gave a statement to police investigating a firework death was jailed yesterday.

David Monks, 44, terrified the 15-year-old, who told officers fireworks were freely available at a premises run by Monks' girlfriend and her family.

The court heard how police were investigating in the Witherwack area of Sunderland after Arthur Lonsdale died when a firework was put through his letterbox in April 2004.

Officers were told by local youths that Linda Mitchell, 29, would supply fireworks and cigarettes to children.

Because of the inquiries, members of the Mitchell family faced money-laundering and other charges, which resulted in suspended prison sentences.

Newcastle Crown Court heard how Monks labelled the 15-year-old a grass and threatened to kill him.

Monks, of Castle View, Sunderland, denied two charges of witness intimidation relating to the incidents early last year, but was found guilty by a jury.

Bob Spragg, in defence, said Monks never used violence towards the youngster and never bothered other witnesses.

Mr Recorder Andrew Kershaw jailed Monks for 12 months.

Prosecutors said there was no link between fireworks being sold by the Mitchell family and what happened to Mr Lonsdale.
