THE Army paid its own tribute to its Royal commander-in-chief yesterday.
A 21-gun salute boomed out from York's Museum Gardens to mark the Queen's birthday.
The firing party from 40 Regiment Royal Artillery based in Topcliffe, Thirsk, North Yorkshire, used four 105mm light guns to fire the salute on the stroke of noon.
York is one of 12 official saluting stations around the country, including London, Belfast, Edinburgh and Cardiff.
The light field guns - brought into service for Royal Salutes a year ago - have seen active service in the Falklands and latterly in Afghanistan.
The public were also entertained by the Waterloo Band of the King's Division.
