VISITORS to Darlington's household waste and recycling centre are to be asked what they think of the newly refurbished facility.

Canvassers will be at the site on Saturday and Sunday, asking people what they think of the improvements.

The site, run by Premier Waste Management, reopened in December after a two-month Defra-funded £750,000 refurbishment, which doubled the size of the Whessoe Road site.

It is now the biggest recycling site in the North-East in terms of tonnage received, and 41 tonnes of cardboard have been recycled there since it reopened.

The refurbishment also created facilities for recycling green waste, timber, cardboard, metals, bric-a-brac, gas bottles, glass, paper, tyres, soil and rubble.

To find out what people think of the site, a group of canvassers will ask visitors about the changes and get their views on the refurbishment.

Councillor Stephen Harker, Darlington Borough Council's cabinet member for consumer and environmental service, said: "I am delighted that the household waste recycling centre has proved so popular with residents.

"I hope people will take time to speak to the canvassers about the changes to ensure the site continues to offer what people need to recycle as much of their waste as possible."

The site is open from 8.30am to 3.30pm, seven days a week, apart from Christmas Day, for use by residents throughout Darlington borough.

Trade waste is strictly prohibited.
