A REFURBISHED mining banner will be unveiled at a concert by a leading County Durham brass band.

The Reg Vardy Band - formerly the Ever Ready Band - will play at Bowburn Community Centre on Saturday, March 11.

The programme will include the premiere of The Bowburn March, a piece composed by Ray Farr to mark the centenary of the sinking of Bowburn Colliery.

The Bowburn Banner Group is restoring two emblems of the pit lodge and creating one to be paraded at the Durham Miners' Gala. A banner from 1959 will be unveiled by Durham MP Roberta Blackman-Woods and a lucky ticketholder.

Tickets cost £2 and £3 and are available from the community centre, Bowburn Surgery, Bowburn Library or Councillor Mike Syer on 0191-377 1491 or Councillor Dennis Morgan on 0191-377 0553. The concert starts at 7.30pm and the bar opens half an hour earlier.

On Friday, March 3, in the community centre Norman Emery, author of Banners of the Durham Coalfield, will give an illustrated talk and will commission the case that will house one of the banners.

Tickets are free as the event is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. They are available from the community centre and Councillors Syer and Morgan.

The talk starts at 7.30pm and refreshments are available from 6.30pm.
