SUPPORT has been received for an innovative scheme promoting businesses in two North Yorkshire towns.

Firms in Malton and Norton will decide later this year if the area should become a business improvement district (Bid).

If they agree, businesses will get more marketing and environmental improvements.

The benefits will be paid for by an increase in business rates.

The scheme, launched by the Malton Norton Initiative, has been backed by John Greenway MP.

He said: "The Malton Norton Initiative has made good strides forward and the area has benefited from the initiative's involvement in a number of projects.

"However, there is still a huge task ahead to secure the commercial viability of the twin towns for future generations. I believe that the Bid application would be a significant step towards this objective."

Local firms are also supporting the scheme.

Terry Ridsdale, from Seeking and Wardle, said: "No one likes to pay even more taxes, but a BID rate levy holds the promise of direct benefits for businesses and residents in Malton and Norton.

"We see it as an investment in the towns' future for the next five years and beyond."

Peter Mudge, town centre marketing manager, said: "We have already proven that local businesses are willing to give financial support to help market the towns and the Bid scheme is a natural progression of our existing arrangements."

The date when businesses will vote on the Bid will be announced shortly.
