ONE of the county's markets will soon be under new management.
The management of the market in Bedale will be taken from Hambleton District Council by the local town council
The transfer of the markets charter -and all responsibility for the weekly gathering to the town -will take place once legal work has been completed.
The district council has been in control of the market since the council reorganisation in 1974, but in recent years, the number of traders has declined despite extensive promotions.
Trading conditions also meant the withdrawal of the monthly farmers' markets last year after only eight months.
Hambleton councillor Ralph Andrew said: "Bedale market is not very profitable and has for some time been subsidised by our other two markets in Northallerton and Thirsk.
"By transferring our rights to hold it to the town council, the town can benefit from a small income, and we hope that more direct service delivery might result in more traders being attracted."
