DAVID Hodgson has issued a take it or leave it ultimatum to former Darlington striker Alun Armstrong, writes Lee Hall.

Hodgson last night confirmed his interest in re-signing Armstrong, nine months after the 30-year-old left Darlington.

Armstrong is a free agent after cash-strapped Rushden & Diamonds were forced to part company with the ex-Middlesbrough man last month.

Hodgson was keen to retain Armstrong's services during the summer, but injury and financial restraints pulled the plug on any deal.

Armstrong has remained injury-free this season, making 13 appearances for Rushden, although Hodgson has warned he will have to take a significant drop in wages if he is to return.

"Alun wants to come back but we can't afford to give him what he was on at Rushden," admitted Hodgson. "There is an offer for him until the end of the season and it's up to him."

If Armstrong does reach an agreement, he is expected to continue commuting from his Ipswich home, but he would be expected to train with Quakers full-time.

Last season, Armstrong divided his time between training with former club Ipswich and Quakers. He made his return in a Quakers shirt for the reserves on Tuesday, impressing in a 2-0 win at Hull City.

"He hasn't missed many games at Rushden this season, which suggests his injury problems are behind him," said Hodgson.

"When he is fit he is head and shoulders above any striker in this division."

Hodgson also believes Armstrong, with over 300 career appearances, would bring a wealth of know-how to a young forward line.

Armstrong is unlikely to sign in time to make his debut against Bristol Rovers tomorrow, although Hodgson could yet add one new face to his squad.

The Quakers boss has made an approach to sign Fulham midfielder Neale McDermott - son of Newcastle United coach Terry - on-loan. McDermott recently returned to Craven Cottage after making 16 appearances loaned out to Swindon.

Meanwhile, Quakers are facing a midfield crisis tomorrow. Phil Stamp (toe) and Anthony Peacock (calf) are major doubts, while Jonjo Dickman has an ankle problem.
