A SCHOOL which faced closure is now looking to a positive future after being granted specialist school status.

Sunnydale School, in Shildon, will become a maths and computing college from next September, following a remarkable turnaround.

Just three years ago, the school was listed for possible closure as part of a £300m shake-up in education by Durham County Council.

It was deemed to have some serious problems, but staff and governors fought back to receive a glowing report from Ofsted inspectors just over a year ago.

The Ofsted report spurred them on to continue the work and apply for specialist status.

Headteacher Sue Byrne said: "I am thrilled and delighted that we will be able to build on the excellent work of recent years, particularly in the use of ICT. Designation will enable the school to grow and develop."

The school will receive a lump sum of £100,000 towards a building project which will include the development of an Internet wireless hotspot.

It will also be given an extra £75,000 a year for school and community developments.

Bishop Barrington Comprehensive School has also been awarded Specialist Status and will become a sports college from September.

The announcement follows the recent opening of a £1.6m purpose-built sports hall, which will be put to good use as the school develops its potential.

Headteacher Bruce Guthrie said: "This is fantastic news."
