CHILDREN from a Derwentside special school are to try out the good life with their own vegetable patch.
Villa Real School, in Consett, is making an allotment accessible to wheelchair users, to teach youngsters about healthy eating.
They will learn how to grow their own fruit, vegetables, salad, herbs and cut flowers.
Headteacher Fiona Wood said: "This work is so important in teaching young people how they can support themselves and take care of the environment.
"Help from local companies gives our students real experiences of partnership working, being a part of and contributing to their local community."
The school has pupils aged two to 19 years who have profound learning difficulties.
The school is looking for sponsorship and donations to sustain the scheme.
It is a registered charity and donations can be set against tax. To help, call (01207) 503651.
