PRAISE is the motto at the heart of success after a school was awarded specialist status.

Norton School had to raise the Government-required £50,000 before being granted specialist humanities college status, which includes English, geography and drama.

The school prides itself on its Praise motto, which stands for progressive, respective, aspirational, inclusive, successful and enjoyable.

To give the school's fundraising a kick-start, an application with the Teesside Community Trust netted £30,000, and with support from local businesses it has reached its target.

Removals company Devereux of Cleveland gave a donation of £10,000 and other small businesses gave their support with £10 donations and donated items for an auction.

Staff and pupils have taken part in many sponsored events, including non-uniform days, raffles and a box for loose change.

Some pupils packed bags at local supermarkets to raise funds, and others busked outside shops.

Headteacher Paul Wray said: "Everyone is delighted at being given the specialist status.

"It will allow us to support our youngsters for the future, and to take on challenges in further education and employment, equipping them for the rest of their lives.

"We are very grateful to everyone for their hard work and donations for this very special cause."
