POLICE have launched a blitz on criminals in the run up to Christmas.

Officers in Consett are clamping down on shoplifters, pickpockets and bag snatchers who are targeting crowded shops in the town centre - and are warning shoppers and pub-goers to be on their guard.

Inspector Andy McConnell, of Consett police, said: "While the festive season offers potential rich pickings for criminals, they should be aware the police in Consett will be working hard in the run-up to Christmas.

"Recent successes show that by acting in partnership with other agencies we can make life very difficult for thieves and anyone else getting up to no good."

Following an increase in shoplifting incidents in the town centre in September, police increased the number of officers on foot patrol to deter shoplifters and increase response times when incidents were reported.

The patrols made two arrests - since when police say there hasn't been a single reported incident of shoplifting in the town centre.

Following the success of the operation, police say they plan to repeat the exercise in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

The extra beat patrols will also target pickpockets, who seem to operate more during the festive season.

Officers say a local man was arrested in the town's Iceland store following the theft of a purse from a woman's shopping bag. His description was circulated to traders through the Shopwatch radio scheme and he was followed using the town's security cameras until police officers caught up with him.

He has been released on police bail - and, again, since the arrest there have been no further reports of similar incidents.

A third area being targeted by the police is thefts in the town's nightclubs, particularly people who prey on unattended bags and steal mobile phones while the owners are distracted.

Last week, a 21-year-old woman was arrested in The Trades nightclub after being spotted by club staff and was released on bail while other offences are investigated.

Insp McConnell said: "However, we would still advise women to be extra careful whilst in crowded licensed premises, and not to leave their handbags unattended.
