YOUNGSTERS at a school are preparing to stage their annual nativity play.

Sixty Durham Chorister pupils aged four to seven will perform the play Donkey for Sale, by Nikki Davies, for nursery pupils and parents today and tomorrow in Durham Cathedral's Chapter House. The musical version of the Christmas story tells the story of Alfie, the donkey chosen by Joseph to carry Mary to Bethlehem, who witnesses the birth of Jesus in the stable.

One of the carols is interpreted in sign language by the pupils, and the retiring collection from performances will be sent to the National Deaf Children's Society and to buy a donkey to help people in a developing country.

A school spokesman said: "The school was delighted to receive good wishes from Eric Boswell, the uncle of one of the members of staff, who wrote both the words and music for the popular carol Little Donkey, which is sung by the audience as the cast take up their places."
