A CHARITY has launched a raffle to keep it going after funding was withdrawn.

Until two years ago, the County Durham Society For The Blind and Partially Sighted received an annual grant from the Royal National Institute For the Blind.

The charity, based in Durham City, now needs to raise £7,000 a year to continue its work with about 2,000 visually-impaired people throughout the county.

Among the projects it offers are talking newspapers, an information and advice centre, computer mentoring scheme and home visit and driver escort services.

The society hopes the raffle will bring in much of the money it needs to keep running.

Sandra Hillyard, volunteer co-ordinator with the society, said: "Since the society gained a lottery licence earlier this year, it has meant that we are able to ask the general public to take part in fundraising events like this one."

Tickets are 50p and all the proceeds will be used by volunteers to help people suffering from sight problems.

The draw takes place on December 12 and tickets can be bought either at a stall in the Milburngate Shopping Centre in Durham City on Friday, December 9, or from the society on 0191-386 8175.

Prizes include a Black and Decker Sand Storm, a microwave oven, restaurant vouchers and Christmas hamper.
