Darlington has been shortlisted for a top award for road safety.

Beacon status is the highest accolade the Government can give to a local authority.

To be shortlisted for beacon status, Darlington Borough Council must have demonstrated it is committed to promoting road safety and has made practical changes to protect residents.

The council has also worked with the local community to make the roads safer and to teach people of all ages about keeping safe.

Nick Wallis, Darlington Borough Council's cabinet member for transport and highways, said: "Road safety is one of the council's top priorities and we are working to develop innovative best practice that keeps all road users safe.

"I am delighted that we have got this far in the process to become a beacon authority."

The shortlisted authorities will now go to the next stage of the selection process, which will include site visits and presentations.

Darlington council will find out in March next year if it has been awarded beacon status. The council already has beacon status for children and adolescent mental health services, the community legal service and the community safety partnership.
