ARTWORK that could have come straight out of Africa has been produced by pupils at a Newton Aycliffe school.

All 340 nursery, infant and junior pupils at Stephenson Way Primary School drew and painted pictures for an African Art exhibition on Wednesday.

They also enjoyed drama sessions, drumming and singing workshops and learned traditional dance routines in a week-long African Arts week.

Teaching assistant Sue Hunter, who teaches art and runs after school art classes, organised the week.

She said: "They heard about problems in parts of Africa through Red Nose Day and Live8 but wanted to know more about the place.

"When they thought of Africa all they could imagine was starving children or people in leopard skins, I wanted to show them how diverse Africa is and let them explore new arts.

"They have really enjoyed it and threw themselves into the projects, producing some really good work which they are all proud of."

Much of the artwork is being sold to friends and family for £6 an item, to cover the cost of the week and boost school funds. Details from the school.
