A CITY'S mayoress is recovering in hospital after a ten-hour operation on her back.
The complicated operation on Ripon Mayoress April Martin was carried out at the Friarage Hospital, in Northallerton, where her condition is comfortable.
Her husband, Councillor Stuart Martin, said: "We knew it was going to be a very big operation but we are hopeful that she will make progress. They have already had her standing up."
The operation on Mrs Martin came after she made slow but continued progress after she fell down stairs.
She was away from civic duties for only a short time and on her return continued her role while on crutches.
