A FREE event to promote bird-feeding as the colder weather draws in is being held next week.

The RSPB has teamed up with Durham County Council and the DLI Museum to celebrate Feed the Birds Day on Saturday, October 22.

It will be held in the grounds of Durham County Hall from 11am to 3pm.

There will be an opportunity to ask the experts about garden birds and to pick up tips on transforming gardens and yards into wildlife havens.

People can get advice on how to care for garden birds, from putting up boxes to what to plant.

An RSPB spokesman said: "Feed the Birds Day marks the clocks going back and the winter nights drawing in - it's the time when birds and other wildlife need a little extra help as the first frost looms.

"Feeding garden birds is typically seen as a winter activity. However, research has shown that it's good to feed birds all year round - for warmth in the cold weather and energy during the breeding season.

"You don't need to be an expert to take part in Feed the Birds Day, providing just a little food, water and shelter can really help birds and turn your garden into a wildlife haven for you to enjoy."

There will be a talk about garden birds at 11.30am and 1.30pm and guided walks of the grounds at noon and 2pm.
