THE achievements of scores of courageous and high-performing youngsters were recognised at a glittering awards ceremony last night.

They picked up a host of accolades in the Vibe Awards presentations, which were made at Darlington Civic Theatre.

Former Pop Idol star Zoe Birkett, back in her home town, helped to launch the evening with a solo performance.

That was followed by more than 100 young people taking to the stage to collect their awards.

They were honoured for making significant contributions to the local community, as well as outstanding performances in the fields of sport, drama, arts and music.

There was also an "Against All Odds" category for youngsters who had battled to overcome adversity.

The ceremony was compered by borough councillor Chris McEwan and Jenna Newman, of Darlington Youth Service.

Among the awards' presenters were Darlington Football Club manager David Hodgson, Darlington Partnership chairman Alasdair MacConachie and the Mayor of Darlington, Stella Robson.

The packed audience was also entertained by performances from local youngsters.

The scheme is run by the youth service and supported by The Northern Echo, Darlington Partnership and Alpha Radio.
