A COMPLEX of flats has been officially opened by the mayor of Middlesbrough, Councillor Kath Bevington.

The Tees Valley Housing Group's latest scheme is in Oliver Street and features two specially designed bungalows for wheelchair users as well as 14 flats with warden call facilities that will be made available to local people in the area.

The scheme has been named Pottery Mews in memory of the area's historic links with the Linthorpe Art Pottery which was founded by local landowner John Harrison in 1879.

The site was formerly a garage and was in a state of disrepair when it was acquired by the housing group in August 1999.

The £735,000 scheme has attracted a lot of applications from potential new tenants.

Coun Bevington said: "I am delighted to have been invited along to officially open this new residential scheme.

"The Pottery Mews project has turned what was quite a dangerous site which was focus for vandals into a premier housing development for people on Teesside.
