PRINCE WILLIAM

The dashing young prince can lay claim to the title of Britain's Most Fanciable Teenager.

At 18, his good looks have ensured him pin-up status and when he was recently asked how he copes with the attention of girls he was savvy enough to say: ''In my own way. Trying to explain how might be counter-productive.''

William, who is expected to go to Edinburgh University after a gap year, is said to be very independent and to enjoy nightclubbing - a pursuit that marks him out as a normal youngster.

However, he also appears to be a private sort. The way his head tilts downwards in photographs and his upward, wary look recall his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales, but these mannerisms could also betray an underlying shyness.

This may mean he will win our respect but it might, eventually, make it harder for him to attract the public's love.

PRINCE HARRY

There's always been something endearingly cheeky about Prince Harry. Maybe it's his spiky hair or his confident smile.

This spring, while skiing in the Swiss Alps, he took the mickey out of his father by stroking his bald patch.

And the 15-year-old has also been known to defy protocol and give autograph hunters his signature during walkabouts - something his dad has always refused to do. One fan in the American trade journal Autograph Collector reported: ''He grabbed my pen and said he shouldn't do it, but seeing it was Christmas, he would.''

He may be the little brother, but Harry is the obvious contender to become the public's favourite.

PRINCESS BEATRICE

During the Queen Mother's birthday celebrations, young Princess Bea gave a cheeky wave to her great-granny.

She's just 11, but this playing up for the cameras shows she delights in high jinks and has a huge personality just waiting to burst out.

With her long red hair, Beatrice is a dead ringer for her mother Fergie -and she is already 5ft 4ins tall.

But at a Cenotaph service last year, this vivacious youngster also showed she knows her royal duties. She appeared to faint but within minutes she was back on her feet and singing the National Anthem - minus her hat and with a face as white as a sheet.

PRINCESS EUGENIE

Ten-year-old Princess Eugenie can be a bit of a tearaway, according to her proud dad Prince Andrew.

He said of his younger daughter: ''She is undoubtedly a leader and she has a maverick streak in her.''

Since she's Fergie's daughter, we wouldn't expect anything less. But this little girl is also said to be hugely popular with the royal household and doted on by the Queen.

Eugenie has a tendency to yawn widely at royal events - she's done it at Sandringham, the Trooping of the Colour and at Edward and Sophie's wedding. This always raises a chuckle among the public.

PETER PHILLIPS

Broad-shouldered Peter Phillips is now 22 and has grown up into a royal heart-throb.

Princess Anne's son, who has just graduated in Sports Science from the University of Exeter, is the kind of down-to-earth bloke to whom many people in Britain will relate. He took his summer break with his university classmates in Majorca, on a package deal to Magaluf.

It's refreshing to know that the Queen's grandson, who is also a talented rugby player, is just like other twentysomethings, but is he too much of an ordinary lad to grab the public's imagination?

ZARA PHILLIPS

Spirited Zara Phillips is a 19-year-old with a taste for adventure - lately she's bungee-jumped, gone white water rafting and taken a hair-raising jet boat ride down a treacherous river canyon.

She also showed a strong-willed side to her character when she had her tongue pierced a couple of years ago.

Last week, she was captured feigning disgust at the prospect of kissing her brother at his graduation.

But this fun girl can also appear every inch as royal as her mother, Princess Anne, when she puts on her finery. The public can't help but love her.

LORD FREDERICK WINDSOR

He boasts model looks, piercing green eyes and never-ending long legs - which should have made Lord Frederick a favourite among the nation's girls.

He also is far from stuffy, having described himself in a Hello! magazine article as ''happy and slightly mad'' with an ambition to own a crocodile farm and score a goal for Manchester United.

But the 21-year-old son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent has disgraced himself too badly and too often to become a public favourite.

Last year, he confessed to snorting cocaine at a party and he hit the headlines again last month when he was pictured sprawled across the stairs at a party. He later admitted he'd had too much to drink.

LADY GABRIELLA WINDSOR

With her long blonde hair and dark eyes, 19-year-old ''Lady Ella'' fulfils the first prerequisite for becoming a royal pin-up - she is a beauty.

Lord Frederick's sensible younger sister is said to be clever and has the kind of zany personality that could endear her to the public.

Her mother once said: ''She's sort of somewhere else much of the time, delightfully vague and funny.''

However, Ella doesn't like the limelight and was said to be shocked when her appearance at this year's Badminton horse trials in a wide-brimmed hat caused a sensation. She probably won't want to be a royal golden girl.
