ROMANBY Golf Club will be in the spotlight next Friday when Ryder Cup star Colin Montgomerie opens its new £800,000 clubhouse.

As well as performing the official opening ceremony, the European No.1 will also hold a golf clinic on the driving range and, after lunch, go out on the back nine holes to play three holes against selected guests.

The day marks the culmination of a project which began in July 1993, when the club opened after an initial investment of £1.5 million.

The new clubhouse will offer the best in modern facilities, including a golfers bar and lounge, changing rooms, showers, restaurant, boardroom for 12 people and a function room for up to 100 people with a patio overlooking the ninth green.

The function room will be available for business meetings and product launches as well as weddings and Christmas parties.

The first brick of the clubhouse building was laid by Gladys Craven, wife of the late Leslie Craven, whose idea it was to create a new club in the late 1980's.

The Romanby course itself was designed by Will Adamson and developed to USGA specification.
