A SCHEME to give youngsters in a North-East borough the best start in life has been approved by the Government.

The Sure Start programme, in Stockton, aims to give hundreds of local children a healthy head start so that they are ready to succeed at school.

Education and Employment Secretary David Blunkett said: "Sure Start aims to give our young children a flying start - and lets parents get involved in the future of their children.

"The programme will provide a wide package of help, advice and support for local families and children from before birth to age four, developed in consultation with the local community."

Health Minister Yvette Cooper added: "This new Sure Start programme which will be based in the Hardwick, Mile House and Roseworth wards in Stockton, is bringing £1.7m over three years to improve the life chances of local young children by giving greater access to family support, child health services and early education.

"The programme will make a real difference for children and families. It is one of the second wave of Sure Start programmes starting work across England this summer."

The scheme is being led by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and intends to build on existing work in the area.

It will provide a home visiting team of professionals and volunteers offering support and information on Sure Start and other services.

There will be a Sure Start centre which will include a community caf, facilities for parental skills training, a toy and resource library, creche facilities, baby clinic, playgroup space and outside play area.

The programme will also provide lifestyle support for people trying to kick habits or who are victims of abuse. There will also be a baby and health clinic and easier access to health facilities
