COUNCILLORS in Derwentside will discuss whether to spend £270,000 on new vehicles next week.
Council officers recommend the district councillors buy the vehicles to be used for building work, rather than spend money every year in hire costs.
At present, 11 council vehicles are in a "very poor condition", and five highways maintenance vehicles have been on continual hire for a number of years, according to a council report.
Director of public services Mike Clark said in the report that new vehicles would reduce emission levels damaging to the environment.
He said it was expected that replacing vehicles on long-term hire would save about 40 per cent in costs, and the new vehicles would give a boost to the workforce.
Councillors at Derwentside District Council will discuss the proposal at a cabinet meeting in Consett Civic Centre today.
