NORTH-EAST actor Tim Healy has logged on for his first lesson in computing.

The Auf Weidersehn Pet star joined other adult learners to get to grips with the mysteries of micro-technology, at one of 31 learndirect centres opening in the region.

The Learning Place, in Sunderland, is one the centres offering a range of courses run by Ufi Ltd, the Government organisation promoting lifelong learning.

The actor said: "I chose to sign up for learndirect's using a computer course because I have never done any e-learning before, and it looks really interesting.

"It also looks good fun and for someone who is really busy like me it makes it easy to fit some learning into my schedule.''

Ufi chief executive Anne Wright said: "learndirect puts people in touch with the skills they need, and makes learning an everyday part of life and work.

"People can pick up skills in half an hour over lunch, at their local leisure centre after they have worked out, while they are out shopping, or at pubs, clubs and community centres.''

New centres in the North-East include ones at Stockton, Bishop Auckland, Darlington, Chester-le-Street, Langley Park and Durham City.
