Junior round-up

Billingham Bears suffered two weekend losses in English Junior (U-16) North A league. On Saturday, they hosted league leaders Sheffield Rapiers at the Forum ice arena.

Bears restricted Sheffield to only one goal in the 12th minute and Rapiers doubled their advantage 71 seconds into the second. Further woe for the home team came at 30.40 when Sheffield went 3-0 ahead.

The consolation goal for the Teessiders was scored by Zoe Bayne on the powerplay at 35.39. Three minutes later Sheffield restored their three-goal advantage. Sheffield wrapped up a 5-1 victory with a goal at 41.32.

The following day, Bears faced Nottingham Cougars who, in the opening period, went 2-0 ahead with two goals in four minutes. Visitors Billingham were back in the game at 23.29 when Paul Harland struck their first reply on the powerplay. However, two minutes later Nottingham restored their two-goal advantage.

Cougars were short-handed when they went 4-1 ahead to put the game out of Bears' reach. Steven Pritchard manage to reduce the deficit in the 43rd minute.

Billingham Wildcats remain top of the Women's Division One North after a 5-2 victory at Hillheads against Whitley Bay Squaws. Vanessa Hill put Wildcats ahead at 9.05 and doubled the lead 46 seconds later. Zoe Bayne scored twice in nine minutes for a 4-0 lead after 27 minutes. Beverley Hutchinson, on her debut, came on to replace Jenny Smith at 22.52. Stephanie Oldfield was on target for Squaws in the 30th minute.

Bayne completed her hat-trick with a power-play goal after 30 minutes. Whitley hit a second late in the game.

Billingham Pumas went down 25-0 away to Telford Terrahawks in the English Bantam (U12) North A League while Sunderland Cherokees were beaten 6-2 at Blackburn Sparrowhawks in the same competition. James Moutrey and Rachel Hooper were Cherokees' scorers.

Whitley Tomahawks were involved in a thrilling encounter at Hillheads in Junior (U-16) North A League. Their first game of the season saw them up against Kingston Crunch. Joe Stamp gave them the lead only for Kingston to lead 2-1 at the first break. D J Good tied the scores at 17.12 and two minutes later Kingston were back ahead. Good and Robert Wilson sent Whitley into a 4-3 lead at 22.27. Kingston drew level in the 25th minute, but two goals from Richard Dunn and Sean Croft pushed Whitley into a 6-4 advantage at 29.34.

Kingston, not to behind for long, struck goals at 30.43 and 35.36 to earn a share of the spoils.

Altrincham Jets defeated Sunderland Arrows 5-2 also in the U-16 North A. Arrows began well with two early goals from Nathan Forster and Michael Allinson for a 2-0 lead. Jets pulled a goal back short-handed at 13.14.

It all went flat for Sunderland in the second period as they picked up penalties. Both Liam Telfer and John Wilson received major penalties for roughing. Shaun Kippin followed in the final period with five plus game for unsportsmanlike conduct. Altrincham scored twice in both second and third periods.

The Sunderland club are to make a formal complaint to the English Ice Hockey Association regarding the refereeing standard at the game.

Daniel Coffeey, Grant Sharp each scored four and Jack Watkins with one were on target for Sunderland Apaches in their 10-9 defeat at Kirkcaldy in an Under-10 challenge.

Sunderland Scorpions' 100 per cent record in the Women's Premier League remains in tact following a 2-1 victory at Guildford Lightning on Sunday. Guildford had won all three of their games and took the lead at 31.01 after two goalless periods.

Scorpions equalised through Nicky Pattinson on the powerplay at 37.42 and with the game well balanced and heading for a draw, Lynsey Emmerson latched on to a long pass out of defence to score the winning goal with under two minutes remaining.

THE Blackhall women's and veterans' bowls clubs united for a social afternoon and tea in the village Workmen's Club for the annual presentation of trophies and prizes won in club tournaments during the past season. The President, Mr Noraan Passfield, who was welcomed by vice-chairman, Mr Tom Robson, presented the veterans' awards, and the women's awards were presented by their president, Mrs Elsie Mason.
