Following an impressive debut season in Formula Renault 2000 last year, John Johnson dominated the British Automobile Racing Club's British Formula Renault championship, taking the crown with ten wins out of 11 races.

Driving his Swift Formula Renault car, Johnson, from Houlsyke, near Danby, has competed at most of the major circuits in the country after winning the first round at Oulton Park in April.

He then went to Donington where his friend and teammate Alex Bates from Yarm won but after that minor blip normal service resumed with a win in Wales at Pembrey.

The next round was a double header meeting in Belgium at Zolder.

John reflected on the weekend, saying: "I qualified on pole position by 5.8 seconds. The race on Saturday was in perfect weather and I won the race and broke the lap record.

"The race on Sunday could not have been more different with torrential rain lashing the circuit. I was leading but made a mistake in the last corner and had to drive through the pit lane and rejoined dead last. I then feel that I drove the best race of my life to retake the lead with one lap to go."

The wins kept coming with victories at Silverstone, Brand's Hatch and Thruxton, before clinching the championship at Mallory Park last month.

It meant the pressure was off for the finale at Snetterton two weeks ago.

Johnson said: "The real hero is my engineer Tim Crowther who stepped in at the last minute and has prepared the car to an exceptionally high standard.
