A MAN was taken to hospital and a further three people arrested after a town centre brawl involving up to 40 men and women.

Police were called to Wilson Street, in Middlesbrough, in the early hours of yesterday, following a report of a fracas, thought to have started at a taxi rank.

The fight, which took place at the bottom of Linthorpe Precinct, under the A66, broke up when officers arrived, with most of the group making off.

Three people were injured, all men in their early 20s, and one of them required hospital treatment for facial injuries.

He was taken to Middlesbrough General Hospital and later released, although he will need to return for further treatment.

The other two casualties suffered minor cuts and bruises, and were allowed home.

Following the incident, a 22- year-old man, a 16-year-old youth, and a 25-year-old woman were arrested, and are now helping police with their inquiries.

Detective Sergeant Andy Greenwood, who is investigating the brawl, is trying to find out what sparked it off.

He is keen to speak to anyone who left the scene without talking to officers, or any witnesses.

They can contact him on (01642) 303126.
