ONE of the region's longest serving lollipop ladies is leaving after 23 years.

Mary Lally, who helps patrol the road outside Cockerton Primary School, Darlington, initially only took the job on for one term.

She had intended to use the part-time post to save up for a present for her in-laws, but enjoyed it so much she decided to stay.

Described as always having a smile on her face, she has also been known to wag a finger at drivers who invade her territory outside the school gates.

She said: "It has been a great job. It's very rewarding and the best thing about it is meeting people."

Mrs Lally, who will retire at the end of this term, will be a special guest at Cockerton Primary School's Christmas assembly on December 15.

She plans to take more holidays with her husband, John.

Denise Caley, Darlington Borough Council's assistant road safety officer, said: "Mary has been one of the borough's guardian angels, who will be very hard to replace. She will be missed by children and parents alike."

Her job will be taken over by fellow Darlington lollipop lady Jacqueline Hamilton in January.
