Football: In the Wensleydale League

Hawes United moved to the top of the league in style, scoring a goal at the rate of just over one every four minutes. They hammered luckless bottom team Redmire 22-0, leading 10-0 at half-time, Stuart Dinsdale netting nine times. Bishopdale climbed to fourth place with a 3-2 victory at Reeth and Middleham Town won by a similar score at Catterick Village. In the third round of the North Riding Saturday Challenge Cup, Leyburn and Carperby won through to the next round. Spennithorne, Bowes, Richmond Mavericks and Swale Travaux were all knocked out.

Ladies Football: Durham are now in a strong position to progress to the semi-finals of the Women's Northern League Second Division Cup after beating rivals Newton Aycliffe 6-2 in the first leg of the quarter finals. Helen Richardson opened the scoring for City before Nicki Duckly replied with two excellent solo goals for Newton Aycliffe.

However, Durham immediately replied with a great goal through Amanda Smith who weaved her way through the visitors' defence and then lofted the ball over the 'keeper.

The second half was all Durham and Richardson scored three goals in a 15- minute spell which sealed the victory before Gemma Charlton scored with a long-range free-kick. After the match Durham manager Stephen Hamil paid tribute to striker Richardson.

He said: "Helen was superb. She held the ball up well and played the easy pass when under pressure and then when she got half a chance to score a goal she took it. Helen is proving to be a prolific scorer for us and has 30 goals so far this season."

Football: In the Darlington Church and Friendly League the only game to beat the weather was at Shildon where Three Tuns hosted to Hurworth Otter and Fish. After an evenly contested first half which ended goalless thanks to some fine stops by Otter's keeper Jonathan Edwards, the deadlock was broken by an own goal midway through the second to put the home team in front. This brought more effort from the visitors who pushed forward and made efforts turn into goals as they finally broke through the home defence and take all three points with a 4-1 win, Jonathan Bell striking a hat-trick with Wayne King rounding off the scoring.
