POLICE are hunting a rogue builder who is preying on pensioners in Darlington.

The man has targeted elderly people in various parts of the town in the past few weeks.

On each occasion he told them that there were slates or tiles missing from their roofs and asked for cash in advance for repair work.

He was paid amounts ranging from £150 to £250 by his victims.

Detective Sergeant Alec Francis, of Darlington CID, said: "We are looking for this man, and in the meantime we would urge people not to let anyone in their homes without seeing identification, and certainly not to hand over money before any work is done."

The man is described as being in his late-30s to early- 40s, 5ft 10in, of heavy build, with dark brown, cropped hair. He often wears a blue boiler suit and carries a clipboard.

Anyone with information about the man is asked to contact police on (01325) 467681
