Stockton Borough Council workers will spend the next two weeks clearing litter and weeds from a two-mile section of the Castle Eden cycle and pedestrian route, between Harrowgate Lane, Hardwick, and Darlington Road, Hartburn.
The former railway track is a well-used green link in the west of Stockton.
The operation follows concerns by councillors and residents, and is part of a programme of cleansing work across the borough.
Councillor Paul Baker said: "Our cleansing squad will be working flat out over the next fortnight to tidy up this track.
"In a number of places, it has become heavily littered with broken glass on the surface."
