HEALTH chiefs were aware of complaints against a disgraced gynaecologist for a decade before he was struck off.

Polish-born hospital doctor Janusz Wszeborowski continued to work until colleagues finally reported him. He was struck off last week, for serious professional misconduct.

Several more cases involving the doctor have emerged, including one which resulted in the death of a baby.

Lesley Drummond, 40, of Pelaw, Gateshead, was awarded £10,000 by Gateshead Health Authority out-of-court. She claims mistakes were made after she was refused a Caesarean section.

Maria Boyd, 48, of Wrekenton, Gateshead, was shocked at her rough treatment by Wszeborowski during the birth of her third child, Andrew, in 1991.

Diane Ellwood, 39, of Springwell Village, Gateshead - a patient of Wszeborowski during the birth of her daughter, Catherine, in 1987 - said he pulled her all over the bed using a Ventouse cap.

Lyn Fairless, 31, of Saltwell Road, Gateshead, said he was unbelievably rough during the birth of her daughter, Carlie, in 1988.

Elaine Snell, 36, of Teal Farm, Washington, had problems with the doctor during the birth of daughterm Lauren, in 1992. She claimed a complaint was dismissed by the health authority
