THE WINNERS of a weekly game of bingo have been given a sweet surprise by a local confectioner.

Every Wednesday afternoon, a group of pensioners from Friendships in Durham, a social group for people with learning difficulties, visits Manor House, in Annfield Plain, to play bingo, board games and dominoes with elderly residents.

Now Daisy Galore, a confectionery manufacturer from Stanley, has made an offer that makes a full house taste even sweeter - they have donated a large assortment of goodies as prizes.

The games tournaments, arranged by Friendships in Durham coordinator Kerry Ramm, have so far proved a success.

Ms Ramm said: "The residents look forward to a visit from the Friendships in Durham clients, and the clients love going to Manor House.

"Everyone has built up a close relationship and the sweets made the event even more fun.

"We've not played for prizes before, so we saw lots of friendly rivalry, but thankfully, no cheating."

Stuart Mills, manager of the Daisy Galore factory, said: "We are always trying to give something back to the community and are always willing to help local organisations and give support to local causes."

Friendships are looking for new volunteers who could act as a friend to a person with learning difficulties.
