TWO goals from Scottish international Don Hutchison spurred Sunderland to their first Premiership victory in seven games against all the odds at Stamford Bridge.
Peter Reid's men were twice behind against their star-studded rivals and appeared to be heading for defeat after French international Marcel Desailly scored with a header in the 14th minute.
But Hutchison equalised in the 28th minute and then, after Icelander Eidur Gudjohnsen had restored Chelsea's lead in the 38th minute, came to the rescue again six minutes into the second half.
Chelsea seemed shocked by the Sunderland fightback and went behind on the hour when new England man Gavin McCann fired home a low left foot shot after a great knock-on by Hutchison.
Chelsea made three second half substitutions in a bid to salvage a point, but Sunderland assured themselves of their first double of the season - and their first win at Stamford Bridge for 44 years - when England striker Kevin Phillips grabbed his 15th goal of the season in the 78th minute.
