A TEAM of rugby rookies were celebrating a tournament win yesterday.

Lumley A team came out on top after a rugby union tag tournament for under-11s, held at Chester-le-Street's Riverside cricket ground.

The team from Lumley School, Great Lumley, near Chester-le-Street, beat school teams from Ouston, Woodlea and Newker.

The tournament was organised by the Active Sport Programme, a national funding project which works with local education authorities, schools and sports clubs to help children get more from sport at grassroots level.

Tag rugby is a non-contact version of the game that helps develop youngsters' passing and handling skills.
