Celtic have been crowned Scottish champions in front of 60,000 ecstatic fans at Parkhead.

Tommy Johnson's 38th minute goal was enough to beat bottom-placed St Mirren and secure the quickest title triumph in 26 years.

After the Bhoys had missed a hatful of chances, Johnson settled the home fans' nerves by sliding the ball home after good work by Henrik Larsson.

The SPL title is a personal triumph for Martin O'Neill in his first season in charge at Parkhead.

Former Leicester boss O'Neill told Sky Box Office: "It's been a fantastic day. It's all been worthwhile now.

"There was a bit of tension in the dressing room beforehand with all the build-up and the expectation."

Swedish hotshot Henrik Larsson, who has scored 47 goals this season, said: "We had everything to lose today. They tried to sit back and tried to counter us.

"Luckily we scored one goal and we managed to win the game. It's a tremendous feeling to win. This is very special to me."

Celtic are also on course to smash two other records.

They could rack up the highest points total ever for a Scottish side and join an elite band of British clubs to reach the magic ton mark.

Celtic are currently sitting on 88 points and if they win their last five league games, they could have a 103 points haul.

The Scottish record is 91 points, which Rangers managed last season.

Four English sides have topped the ton with Sunderland holding the record with 105 points from their 1998-99 First Division campaign.
