NEWSPAPER cuttings reliving Grand National success and pictures of a winning FA Vase team will form the heart of an exhibition celebrating sporting heroes.

Long gone are the days when Bishop Auckland won the FA Vase, and Red Alligator stormed to victory in the Grand National in 1968.

But the town is still proud of its winning achievements and memorabilia of the triumphs go on display today, at the Discovery Centre, in Bishop Auckland Market Place.

Red Alligator's trainer, Denys Smith, has given photographs of the horse and newspaper cuttings from his private collection for the exhibition.

A series of prints of the town's football team dating from 1891 to 1957 will also be on display.

Other highlights include memorabilia on the history of Bishop Auckland Golf Club and Cricket Club and other victories from the area.

The exhibition runs today, Friday, and Saturday from 11am to 4pm. For more information contact (01388) 662666.
